The
entire Sacrament of Penance is a symbol in itself. The priest acts in a symbol
of God, where he gives absolution to the penitent on behalf of God. Reconciliation
is a symbol of life, God and the Church by which we Christians ‘die to sin and
rise to new life’ (Lilian Marie, 2008). The liturgical colour of the Sacrament
of Penance is Purple. Purple symbolizes repentance and penance; reflection and
humility which are all human characteristics explored throughout this sacrament
(National Catholic Education Commission).
